Phase 2 (P2) is a new collective of emerging Scarborough Hip Hop artists.

The Phase 2 artists must come to the collective already passionate about Hip Hop, creatively motivated and independently focused on succeeding as an artist.

Under professional guidance, the emerging artists experience realities and expectations of the music industry by organizing themselves and working as a creative team. The artists will learn how to create a complete project by developing an original artistic concept, meeting tight deadlines, writing, refining and practising original lyrics and recording a collaborative EP in a professional studio. The artists will develop and enact a sustainable marketing & promotion strategy using social media, a music video, networking, media appearances, public relations and live performance.

Artistic Development (AD) Program

AD is a space for young people to explore their voices through various artistic channels...in true Lost Lyrics style, although we have our own ideas, we shape our spaces mixing these ideas with the interests and feedback of our students. engaged in photography, graffiti, film and music recording in this program. AD is most famously known throughout the city as the space where Lost Lyrics brings students from Jane-Finch and Malvern together every week in the downtown core...challenging our students to transcend their hoods and create a Lost Lyrics community. A dynamic new community space in Weston Mount Denis, a place for Young and Potential Fathers, will be opening their doors soon. Before their grand opening they need to decorate their freshly painted walls. Nia Centre for the Arts is partnering with the Young and Potential Fathers Initiative to beautify their space with artwork from the community.

Calling on all visual artists to submit artwork that abstractly or directly highlights Afro-diasporic youth, families, fathers and sons, bonding between males young and old to decorate the space.

A small budget is available to purchase work, but donations are encouraged, as well as prints of work. If you are an emerging or established visual artist and are interested in seeing your work on display in a beautiful, community oriented venue, please fill out the submission form attached and submit it to art@niacentre.org by Tuesday, November 30th, 2010.

The Remix Project is excited to announce the launch of a new stream of programming.Working alongside already incredibly successful Recording Arts and Creative Arts streams in response to the overwhelming demand in photography applications developing a stream specifically dedicated to this art form.

In partnership with the Hermann & Audrey Collective and led by Jalani Morgan, The Art of Photography will explore the diversity of fields in photography such as fashion, portraiture, editorial, sports, documentary, news, street, nature, landscape, urban and fine art photography.
In the spirit of Remix programming this is an application based stream: They are looking for young people between the ages of 16-22 who demonstrate talent, creativity, motivation and need for this space. We will only be selecting 10 of the best and brightest. With the launch of this new stream the deadline for applications has been extended to Friday, December 10th. Subtext Multi-Arts Festival happened with the help of the Scarborough art council, here are a few pictures and please follow this link to view and obtain more details on the occurrences at this event. It was a 2 day event on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12, 2010 under the Lawrence Avenue East bridge which separate Orton Park and Galloway. It was my first time there (not including other visits to the other side of Morningside Park) and it was a blast! Thank you to everyone for coming out and being a part of this large success.

[Opportunity] Permanent Public Artwork in Toronto

Mount Dennis Neighbourhood Project at Weston Road and Dennis Avenue

Toronto Cultural Services works with staff across City of Toronto divisions and agencies, boards and commissions to identify exciting new opportunities for commissioning innovative contemporary artworks in the City’s public spaces.

Recently, with real estate development in Ward 11 (York South-Weston) generating Section 37 funds, street upgrades and a traffic calming enlarged sidewalk inserted at the corner of Weston Road and Dennis Avenue, this gateway site to the Mount Dennis neighbourhood has been chosen as the site of a new public art work to be commissioned by the City. The decision has been reached through extensive community consultations, which concluded that an artwork would define the site as a focal point, create a pedestrian friendly environment and encourage awareness of the neighbourhood’s collective heritages and identity.

With roots in a rural past, the Mount Dennis area became a burgeoning centre of mills for saw, wool and grist by the beginning of the 19th century. It gradually evolved into one of Toronto’s largest industrial hubs and for decades was dotted with hundreds of factories and rail yards surrounded by a thriving community of merchants and single home dwellers. But industry eventually left and the culturally diverse neighbourhood is now ripe for much needed revitalization.

Cultural Services views the unique context and parameter of this site as an opportunity to commission an artist or artist team to create a site specific public art work with light and new media components (Note: the bench in the photograph will be removed to accommodate the art work). The art production budget for this project including all fees, materials, technologies, fabrication and installation costs is $225,000.
For this first stage of the competition, Toronto Cultural Services is inviting local and national artists or artist teams to respond to this Expression of Interest (EOI) by submitting the following:

Resume(s) in text form
Artist(s) statement in text form outlining interest in the project and experience
6 to 8 digital images of recent, relevant work in the following format:
jpg images on a PC compatible CD-R
each maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels
each resolution of 72 dpi
each maximum of 1 MB
each RGB, sRGB or grayscale colour mode files only (no CMYK)
caption each with number, your name and title of work
An “Image Information” sheet that details per image: number, artist(s) name, title, date, medium, dimensions. Please be sure the number on the list matches the number of the jpeg image.
Be sure to label the CD-R with your name.
If desired, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of submission material.

Submissions by email are not accepted.

A short list of 3 to 5 artists will be selected during this first stage. A public open house exhibition of the short listed designs and final design selection will be held at a date and place to be announced.

Note that the artists selected for the short list must be prepared to consider the challenge and importance of working closely with the Mount Dennis community and its creative interests. This may take the form of on site community workshops involving organizations such as Urban Arts to inform the development of the artistic content.

The public art concept for the Mount Dennis Neighbourhood Project will be selected through a two stage open competition by a specially convened independent Selection Committee made up of practicing arts professionals and community representatives.

The Mount Dennis Neighbourhood Project is administered by the Public Art Office of Cultural Services in collaboration with Transportation Services, Public Realm, and Right-of-Way (ROW) of the City of Toronto.

In the Filmmaking Program, over the course of 13 weeks, you will learn the technical and business skills of film production. As part of a small crew, you will help write, direct and shoot your own movie. You will get to meet and learn from a variety of professionals currently working in the industry.
The program is intense and requires dedication. It starts in the fall and runs every Saturday and some weeknights until the end of year. If you are up for the challenge, we welcome your application.
Our program provides travel and lunches. Students who complete the Filmmaking Program and show their dedication to a career are eligible for our Internship Program.

* POV serves at-risk youth. You must identify with this description and be able to briefly explain why.
* You must be 19-24 years old on October 1 2010.
* You will need to be available on Saturdays and some weekends from September to December.

In the summer of 1993, the hip hop genre was transformed by the formation the Wu-Tang Clan, a New York City-based hip-hop group consisting of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard. The collective is frequently joined by fellow childhood friend Cappadonna, a quasi-member. The group emerged from the slums of Staten Island and took the hip-hop world by storm. Their legacy spanned over a decade, garnering fans worldwide and generating sales in excess of $50 million. This is their story.

Following the screening, California-based producer P. Frank Williams will be discussing the film and Wu-Tang Clan’s legacy with event host/moderator Adhimu "Mindbender" Stewart.

Project description:
The Stolen From Africa Summer 2010 Media Project involves a series workshops ( twice a week). The project provides youth with opportunities to learn about media outlets and gain skills in filmmaking so they can share their stories.

SFA is looking for 15 energetic and enthusiastic youth between the ages of 15-22 who are interested in participating in a series of summer work shops with regards to filming and editing video production.
Sessions begin July 12th and run every Monday and Wednesday until September 1st.
Participants must commit to the entire 8 weeks of programming. Lunches and TTC assistance provided.

Key Activities:
-Providing workshops and resources to teach the basics of equipment usage, editing and filmmaking skills, in addition to critical thinking skills.
-Providing youth with information on mainstream and alternative media systems
-Support groups of youth to produce 3 independent film projects to be posted on the Stolen From Africa website and shared with other outlets

Key Objectives:
- To support youth to develop filmmaking skills that will allow them to have a voice in society
-To promote alternative sources of media and provide youth with training in these areas
-To educate youth about the histories of oppressed communities, particularly African Canadian

Hey Friends, Sean Banjo (online coordinator) here just filling you in on some critical details for our program this year.
Each year B2DS brings together raw talent from all across the city of Toronto at the Centre for Creative Communication at Centennial College. Emcees, singers, and producers are engaged by artist instructors in two 15 week workshops focused on skill development, writing and performance techniques, the music industry, and hip hop literacy, Participants work collaboratively to develop original music for a CD released upon the completion of the session and program, promote and perform in an end of year Showcase.

Beatz 2da Streetz artists have opened up for Juno nominated artist Zaki Ibrahim, performed on the mainstage at the Manifesto Festival, and rocked airwaves and stages citywide. Beatz aims to provide its participants with useful knowledge and opportunities to help reach their full potential in making positive change and engaging their communities.

We are looking for artists age 16 to 24, with a burning love of music, a desire to have their voice heard and the ability to work with others to continue a movement that has been running strong since 2005. Interested artists must attend an interview on Tuesday March 23rd, or Monday March 30th at the Centennial College Centre for Creative Communication.

Four of Justin Slaven's cousins took part in Cotillion Balls and thoroughly relished the experience.

The 21-year-old Timothy Easton Business Technical Institute graduate also enjoyed being part of this year's event that allows young people to showcase their unique talents. He even went a step further by winning the Escort of the Year award.

"It was something new and I decided to give it a try," said Slaven, an aspiring independent music producer, who intends to enter Humber College next year to pursue Business and Music studies. "I did not know what to expect going in.

"Now I can safely say it was quite an enriching experience in which I met many positive people who I was able to network with during the career sessions. I also made new friends in my age range who shared similar interests as I do. It was fun, but I am still shocked that I won the Escort of the Year prize."

One of the people that Slaven easily bonded with was the artistically inclined Debutante of the Year, Tereka Tyler-Davis.

"We both love the arts and share some of the same passions, so it was easy to get along with him," said Tyler-Davis who began acting at age six and has been a member of the Children's Dance Theatre for the past five years.

The Grade 12 York Memorial Collegiate student, who also sings and is a member of her school's jazz choir, was delighted that she finally found the time to enter the Cotillion Ball.

"It was something I wanted to do for quite a while, but I just did not have the time," she said. "I was determined to do it this year. It was a wonderful experience meeting role models who imparted invaluable life lessons. I also made some lifelong friends."

Tyler-Davis was a member of the Children's Dance Theatre group that participated in the 11th Dance and Child international conference in Jamaica last August.

Participants in this year's Ball took part in workshops that polished their social and life skills through financial planning, career development, entrepreneurship, dining etiquette, public speaking and the significance of making a first impression.

The other Debutantes were aspiring social worker Janelle Heslop; Aleah Goring-Francis who attends Mayfield Secondary School; St. Joseph's Morrow Park Catholic School student Jameela Baird who intends to become a nurse; 17-year-old Sinclair High School student Natasha Ellis; aspiring professional make-up artist Bianca Morgan; Greenwood College student Vincentia Amoako-Opokua; Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic School Grade 12 student Bianca Henry; Rashida James who loves modeling, reading and animals; Northern Secondary School student Travisha Andrews and former Little Sisters-in-Waiting Ariel Hylton and Christina Smith-Foster.

In addition to Slaven, the other nattily attired Escorts were Newtonbrook Secondary School student Shaquille Mullings who intends to become an entrepreneur; Joshua Gilbert who enjoys sports and reading; Seneca College second-year Business student Jeroen Thomas; Sean-Michael Lawrence whose role models are the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Hall of Fame basketball player Michael Jordan; Cedarbrae Collegiate student Jerome Simmons; Owen Pollonais who attends George Brown College; York University student Husain Campbell; 19-year-old Arden Alexander who is enrolled in Durham College; Kaheel White who counts York Regional Police Inspector Chris Bullen as one of his role models; aspiring Criminal Lawyer Jevon Marshall and D'Angelo Small who attends Thistletown Collegiate.

A group of petite Little Sisters-in-Waiting accompanied the Escorts and Debutantes.

Dear GET Members and Friends,
After four years growing the organization and our remarkable community of 300+ members, the GET Steering Committee has decided to expand the mandate of GET to 'go big' and become a regional green business alliance. With great pride in our accomplishments, I am writing to let you know that I am stepping aside as Founding Executive Director of Green Enterprise Toronto.
GET is poised to become the new voice of business in the GTA and beyond. We intend to move from strength to strength, building on the solid foundation of excellent programming and partnerships, enabled by the substantial trust, respect and brand loyalty that GET has earned to date. The organization needs new leadership to take us to the next level, to expand our membership and the scope of our work. GET will offer common voice and policy influence to the hundreds of medium sized companies in southern Ontario that are working hard to become sustainable, to convert the grey industrial economy to green through eco-smart manufacturing, clean tech, renewable energy, and a triple bottom line appoach to all kinds of business. As the new collective voice of sustainable business in the GTA, we can do what other industry associations can't do; we can influence policy and respond the the challenges ahead with a common commitment to people and planet as well as profit.
GET is committed to continue to serve the entrepreneurs and small, local living economy businessss in our network. Your membership benefits will continue and new benefits will be added. At the same time, more medium-sized companies (19-100 employees) will be joining GET with the expectation of achieving new levels of peer-to-peer cooperatioin and policy influence.

106 & YORK URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL

VOLUNTEER CALL-OUT

ATTENTION TO ALL INTERESTED:

106 and York is currently in the process of selecting volunteers to help run the event.

The event is taking place Saturday September 19th, 2009 at the North York Centre for the Performing Arts. The show intends to run mainly from 6pm-10pm, however volunteers are needed for the entire day.

Volunteers will NOT get to attend the show as an audience member as those who have been selected as volunteers will be needed to maintain their duties before, during, and after the show.

Food will be provided to all volunteers the day of the show.

We are in need of a number of people for a variety of positions in order to help make this event a success.

YOUnited has teamed up with GOODBOY CLOTHING to create a friendly design competition for Fashion & graphic designers, visual artists, and Tee-shirt enthusiasts. The top 5 illest designs will be chosen, printed on to some T-shirts, and displayed at the Fresh Fair. Surveys will be on hand for attendees to judge and comment on the shirts. The highest scoring shirt will be reproduced and sold at the MANIFESTO FESTIVAL and featured in a fashion spread in URBANOLOGY MAGAZINE.

Southside Hip Hop Chess Open
It is recognized that chess, martial arts and hip-hop unify people from multiple cultural, religious and social backgrounds. These black and white squares do not care what color you are or if you are rich or poor. The only thing they ask is that you come with your strategy, your patience and your skills.

Involve Youth Drumming Circle

The wonderful people from the Involve Youth group will be setting up a drum circle at the Fresh Fair. People are encouraged to bring their own drums to jam with the cipher. If you don't have one, that's ok...you'll have a chance to get down with the 30+ drums at some point. So come on out and pa-rum-pom-pum-pum on the Djembe drum.
